African Refugee & Resource Center
Founded in 1982 by Reverend Dr. Amos C. Brown, the Center has provided more than 8,000 immigrants and refugees with free services that include English language classes, emergency housing, adjustment counseling, job training, job search and placement assistance, counseling, referrals, cultural orientation, and crisis intervention. These essential services have enabeled our clients to better adjust to their new home.
Back On Track
Back on Track was founded in 1988 as an interfaith collaborative effort between Third Baptist Church and Temple Emanu-El. The unique partnership has crossed religious and cultural differences to build bridges of opportunity for K-12 students. As a non-denominational community based program, Back on Track has served over 2,000 young people from diverse multicultural populations throughout San Francisco.
Charles A. Tindley Academy of Music
The Academy is the vision of Dr. Amos C. Brown, Pastor of the Third Baptist Church of San Francisco. Dr. Brown’s vision took form in 1988 as an outreach ministry of the church. In 1994, the Academy was incorporated as a nonprofit agency.
The Academy was named after Charles Albert Tindley, a man who embodied values in ministry, particularly, in songs. He reflected racial pride and socio-political fulfillment through direct action and education. He raised a prophetic voice through the various art forms in the early 20th Century as a result of the strong migration of southern African-Americans and others into northern urban centers. Dr. Tindley persevered through education and quality music ministries in his church even to inspire the modern-era civil rights movement through his words and melody I’ll Overcome Someday, written in 1901.
Christian Education Ministry
The Educational Ministry is committed to developing and supporting the teaching ministry of the Church based on the word of God as reflected in 2 Timothy 2:15: “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed,rightly dividing the word of truth.” Third Baptist Church is dedicated to providing diverse opportunities for all members of the congregation to participate in as they explore the Christian doctrine and increase their spiritual growth.
Convalescent Hospital Ministry
This group of dedicated men and women have reached out to over 13 different convalescent homes. It is part of the Interdenominational Convalescent Ministry, Inc. started in 1986. The Convalescent Ministry is under the umbrella of the General Women Missionary Union. Volunteers hold weekly religious services throughout San Francisco.
Deacons Ministry
This is a select group of men [women] “of good repute, full of the Spirit and wisdom” (Acts 6:13). The deacons assist he pastor in spiritual matters pertaining to the church. They are essentially responsible for the visitation of the sick, serving of the Lord’s Supper and assistance in matters that aid the smooth operation of Third Baptist Church. The Ministry of Deacons is not open to the general church membership. These men and women are carefully selected by the Pastor, the Ministry of Deacons, the Joint Board and then ratified by the Church body.
Evangelism Ministry
The Evangelism Ministry is an outreach tool of the Church which seeks to take the Gospel to the larger community.
Feed The Hungry
The Feed The Hungry Program idea began in 1976 when Professor William H. Pryor wanted to open up a shelter for homeless people to provide clothing and hot food. The program opened its doors the first Friday in December 1985. The program continues to serve those in need with a hot meal every Thursday.
Laymen Ministry
The Laymen Ministry represents men of the Church who engage in spiritual, physical, and social services to those in need.
Music Ministry
The music ministry of the Third Baptist Church is a vehicle of evangelism whose membership is open to everyone. Our music ministry encompasses various musical idioms. Our goal is to lift the human spirit through spirituals, anthems, hymns, traditional and contemporary gospel songs. Our purpose is to serve God and empower church and community through the ministry of music.
Operation Contact
Operation Contact is an outreach ministry that keeps in touch with the church memembership to check on their welfare or to notify members of special events.
Prison Ministry
Outreach Ministry to indivisuals in jail and prisons.
Senior Ministry
Senior Ministry meets every Wednesday from 11:30-AM to 2 PM. Participants fellowship, listen to guest speakers present information of concern to Seniors, engage in health fairs, play games, and enjoy delicious meals.
Stewardship Ministry
The Stewardship Committee is responsible for promotion of the church stewardship plan and proving education on faithful stewards to the general membership.
Trustee Ministry
This is a group of elected men and women who act as the stewards of the Church’s finances, properties and possessions. Trustees are customarily elected by the church. Among the major duties of the Trustees are: 1) maintaining or improving the church property; (2) advising the church relative to major repairs or improvements; and (3) accounting for all of the church’s finances.
The Trustee Ministry is not open to the general church membership. These men and women are carefully selected and scrutinized by the Pastor, the Ministry of Deacons, the Joint Board and then ratified by the church body.
The Trustees Ministry meets the third Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m.
Usher Ministry
The purpose of the ushers is to serve as doorkeepers in the “House of the Lord”. They have various duties to perform which include: 1) greeting and seating worshippers 2) collecting the offering through the passing of the plates; and 3) helping make worshippers comfortable.
Young Adult Ministry
The Young Adult Ministry provides activities and networking services for those over 25. Members get together to study the bible as well as have social events.
Youth Ministry
The Youth Ministry engages young people in middle and high school. Students come together for a “Friday Night Live” session and engage in choir rehearsal, dialogue, games, including basketball, dinner, and lots of fun. This is an opportunity for young people to meet in a safe and creative environment.

Womens Ministry
The Women's Ministry. reaches out to others through the ministries of (a) Personal Development; (b) Church and Community; and (c) Mission and Service. The Women's Ministry also works with Youth in order to prepare them to serve in the Ministry. The 10 Circles of the Women's Ministry. are: Art & Culture, Business & Professional Women, Busy Bee/Rising Star, CM Haynes-Esther-Ruth, Deborah-Naomi, Dorcas-N.H. Burroughs, Lydia, Mary McLeod Bethune, Phyllis Wheatley, and Priscilla.
